Spady Museum's First Fun Day!

In July, the Spady Museum staff welcomed the children and leaders from the Achievement Centers of Delray Beach for Spady Fun Day!

A museum is not a museum all the time. Sometimes, when it’s hot outside and the children are out of school, a museum becomes an outdoor playground, where modern kids learn old-fashioned games and talk with their elders. Sometimes, a museum is summer joy.

That is what The Spady Museum was on one Monday in July. A group of 26 children from the Delray Beach Family Achievement Center and their camp leaders joined our staff, planted blooms to learn about growing and preserving the land, participated in skits on the hurricane of 1947 to learn about their ancestors’ survival and watched a video on volunteering opportunities for kids. They also talked with our founder Ms. Vera Farrington, played tug-o-war and simply had fun at the Spady Fun Day.

Being a kid is about learning about the world and yourself, and being a museum is about sharing culture and community. Add a dose of silly, crazy, playfulness, and you get a good time, mixed with learning, experiencing, sharing and laughing. No internet connection required.

The Spady Museum plans to have more Fun Days on August 6 and 10. Special thanks to the Achievement Center supervisors Mr. Clayton Bell, Ms. Monica Hilaire and Ms. Carol Smith for their help and support!

Isn’t summer supposed to be the time of year when things slow down? Yes, that used to be the case once upon a time. Now summer has morphed into this second gear of programming and events —  a time when the locals expect to be as entertained as the snowbirds during season. And such is the case at the Spady Museum.

It started in June with the Juneteenth Celebration. More than 100 people gathered around the pool and under the tiki hut at Crane’s BeachHouse in Delray Beach to enjoy food, drinks, live music and a great raffle. The Spady Museum raised more than $6,100 for programming and events. Thanks to sponsors Waste Management and Arts Radio Network for their support.

Next up is the Spady Family Fun Day. Children (and those who used to skip the hydrant) are invited to a slipping and sliding kind of fun in the big ‘backyard’ of the museum. Water games, South Florida heat and the natural craziness that comes with children will be on display. The whole community is welcomed to join in the fun in July.

And while all of this is going on, planning is going on fast and furious for the 2012-13 cultural season. Expect to welcome back the uber-popular “Ride and Remember” Trolley Tour, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast and the Connecting Community and Culture lecture series. Whew!
